The Mount Waverley café that has it all: Swiss Bakehouse
We headed to the Swiss Bakehouse in Mount Waverley to try some of their most delicious sweet and savoury treats.
From decadent muffins to cozy pies and sandwiches, the Swiss Bakehouse in Mount Waverley Village offers a wide range of indulgent treats for any situation.
The Eastern Melburnian visited the café recently and met up with the owner Jamie Sheahan, who has enjoyed running the establishment since buying the place in 2019.
“We’ve had a few obstacles in that time…but we’re still busy so we’re obviously doing something right,” Jamie told the Eastern Melburnian.
Jamie said he particularly enjoys the strong sense of community that comes with being situated in the heart of Mount Waverley Village.
“Everyone knows everyone…it feels like it’s a good place to come for a coffee or something to eat,” he said.
“It’s somewhere where people come and spend time”.
Visiting at around lunchtime, the place was bustling with locals on their work break, particularly teachers from the nearby Mount Waverley Primary School who spoke highly of the food and the atmosphere.
One teacher said she particularly enjoyed the apple muffins, while another customer went more savoury, speaking highly of the chicken schnitzel sandwiches.
In terms of their most popular items, Jamie said it was dependent on the season, but the Bakehouse’s sweets were always a “big hit”.
“In winter, we sell so many pies, sausage rolls, hot toasted sandwiches,” he said.
“As it gets a bit warmer, a lot more sandwiches, rolls, focaccias, quiches”.
When we visited, we indulged in the delightful chicken avocado sandwich. The freshness and zest of the avocado, combined with the warm delight of crispy, toasted bread, made it the ideal summer lunchtime treat.
Jamie welcomed anyone in the area to have a visit and try out the local treats.
“If [someone] wants to come down and try our food…we’ll try and make you feel welcome,” he said.
